The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently completed a survey of 12,232 donors. They asked the donors “what can charities do to inspire more giving?” Here were the top five answers:

31% said “make a compelling case of extraordinary need”

28% said “top sending unwanted trinkets”

21% said “reduce overhead costs”

19% said “offer matching gifts”

19% said “don’t send so many appeals”

There you go. Two things to focus on: a compelling case and acquiring matching gifts. Three things to improve right now: stop sending stuff to donors, reconsider the number of appeals you send, and focus on reducing your overhead costs. Simple, effective ways to keep your donors happy.
